How many pages is 1,000 words?
Double spaced in Times New Roman 12 with 1-inch margins — the default for almost every US college paper — 1,000 words is 4 pages. Single spaced it's 2 pages. The same 1,000 words in Calibri 11 single spaced fits on about 1.7 pages, because Calibri is a narrower, more compact typeface than Times New Roman at the same nominal point size. That gap is why a page target and a word target are never interchangeable.

Reference table: pages to words
Working backwards from a page requirement, double spaced in Times New Roman 12:
- 1 page — about 250 words
- 2 pages — about 500 words
- 3 pages — about 750 words
- 5 pages — about 1,250 words
- 10 pages — about 2,500 words
- 20 pages — about 5,000 words
What actually changes the page count
Font size and line spacing dominate, but four other things move the number more than students expect. Margins: dropping from 1 inch to 0.5 inch adds roughly 20% more text per page. Paragraph spacing: Word's default 8pt after each paragraph costs you several lines on a page of short paragraphs. Headings and subheadings, which eat vertical space without adding many words. And paper size — A4 (used in the UK, Canada and Australia) is slightly taller and narrower than US Letter, so the same document usually runs a fraction of a page shorter on A4.
Typical length requirements
- High school essay: 300–1,000 words (1–4 pages double spaced)

FAQ
How many pages is 500 words?
Double spaced in Times New Roman 12 with 1-inch margins, about 2 pages. Single spaced it is about 1 page. The same 500 words in Calibri 11 single spaced runs closer to 0.8 pages, because Calibri sets narrower at the same nominal point size.
Does A4 or US Letter change the page count?
Slightly. A4, the standard in the UK, Canada and Australia, is taller and narrower than US Letter, so the same document usually runs a fraction of a page shorter on A4. The estimates here assume 1-inch margins on either paper size.
Why does Word show a different page count?
Headings, block quotes, tables, figures, a bibliography and Word's default 8 pt spacing after each paragraph all consume vertical space without adding words. Treat any converter as an estimate and trust the page count in your own document.
My professor set a page limit rather than a word limit. What do I aim for?
Use the pages-to-words mode to get a word target, then write to the middle of it. Do not stretch the font, spacing or margins to reach a page count — it is obvious to any marker, and many US and UK departments specify the exact format for that reason.
