How Many Pages Is 1,000 Words? (Reference Table)

A 1,000-word document runs about two pages single-spaced and four double-spaced — but your font moves that by more than half a page. Full reference table from 250 to 10,000 words, both directions, plus reading and speaking time.

A 1,000-word document fills about two pages single-spaced or four pages double-spaced in Times New Roman 12 pt with 1-inch margins. That covers what most people need, but it is a rule of thumb rather than a measurement — switch to Calibri 11 pt and the same 1,000 words shrink by more than half a page, which can be the difference between clearing a four-page minimum and missing it.

Quick Answer — 2 Pages Single-Spaced, 4 Pages Double-Spaced

The numbers everyone quotes come from one baseline: US Letter or A4 paper, 1-inch margins, Times New Roman 12 pt, continuous prose with no headings or block quotes. On that setup a page holds roughly 500 words single-spaced and roughly 250 words double-spaced, which puts 1,000 words at two pages and four pages respectively. At 1.5 spacing you land in between, around three pages.

Three things quietly break that baseline: your font, your paragraph spacing, and anything that is not a full line of prose. A page of dialogue, a bulleted skills list, or a paper with four subheadings all burn vertical space without burning many words, so they run longer than the table predicts. A dense block of academic prose with long paragraphs runs slightly shorter.

Treat any figure on this page — including the table below — as a planning estimate accurate to about half a page. If someone is going to count your pages, set the document up in the required format and check it there.

Why Your Font Changes the Page Count

Ad space

Point size is not the whole story. Two fonts at the same nominal size can differ by well over 10% in how many words fit on a line, because they differ in x-height, character width and default line spacing. Word's own default has moved between Times New Roman, Calibri and Aptos over the years, so a document that was four pages on one machine can open as three and a half on another.

Here is the same 1,000 words, double-spaced, 1-inch margins, across three common settings. These are worked estimates, not measurements from a study:

Font and size Approx. words per page Pages for 1,000 words
Times New Roman 12 pt ~250 ~4.0
Arial 11 pt ~265 ~3.8
Calibri 11 pt ~295 ~3.4

The swing between the widest and narrowest setting is roughly 0.6 of a page on a 1,000-word document — and it scales. At 5,000 words those same three settings differ by about three pages, enough to turn a 20-page chapter into a 17-page one.

If a brief specifies a font, use it and stop optimizing. If it specifies only a page count, Times New Roman 12 pt double-spaced is the safest assumption a reader will have in mind. You can check the count for your own font, size and spacing in a few seconds rather than guessing.

Full Reference Table — 250 to 10,000 Words

Same baseline as above: 1-inch margins, 12 pt Times New Roman, continuous prose. Round to the nearest half page when you plan.

Words Single-spaced 1.5 spacing Double-spaced
250 0.5 page 0.75 page 1 page
500 1 page 1.5 pages 2 pages
750 1.5 pages 2.25 pages 3 pages
1,000 2 pages 3 pages 4 pages
1,500 3 pages 4.5 pages 6 pages
2,000 4 pages 6 pages 8 pages
2,500 5 pages 7.5 pages 10 pages
3,000 6 pages 9 pages 12 pages
5,000 10 pages 15 pages 20 pages
7,500 15 pages 22.5 pages 30 pages
10,000 20 pages 30 pages 40 pages

Every row uses the same three constants: 500 words per page single-spaced, about 333 at 1.5 spacing, 250 double-spaced. That is why the table stays exactly proportional — and it is also the table's limitation, since real documents carry titles, headings and reference lists that the proportion knows nothing about.

Converting Pages Back to Words

Assignments are often set the other way around: eight to ten pages, double-spaced. Invert the same constants and you get a word budget you can actually write to.

  • Double-spaced — pages × 250. An 8–10 page paper is 2,000–2,500 words.
  • 1.5 spacing — pages × 333. A 6-page paper is about 2,000 words.
  • Single-spaced — pages × 500. A 3-page brief is about 1,500 words.

Working in words rather than pages is the better drafting habit, because a word budget divides cleanly across sections. For a 2,000-word paper: 200 words for the introduction, four body sections of 400, and 200 for the conclusion. You can hold that in your head while writing. "Page five of ten" tells you nothing about whether the argument is on track.

One caution on the reverse direction. Reference lists, appendices and title pages usually do not count toward a word limit, but they do occupy pages. Check which one is being measured before you pad or trim.

How Long Will 1,000 Words Take to Read or Present?

The same word count answers a second question that page converters usually skip. Adult silent reading typically runs somewhere around 200–250 words per minute, and speaking aloud is much slower — Omnicalculator's words-per-minute reference puts a typical presentation pace near 130 words per minute. Both are typical ranges that vary by person, material and language, not fixed rates.

Applied to 1,000 words, that means roughly 4 to 5 minutes of silent reading, or roughly 7 to 8 minutes read aloud at presentation pace.

That gap matters more than the page count for anything you will deliver out loud. A 10-minute conference slot is about 1,300 words of script, not 2,000, and the most common rehearsal mistake is writing to the reading rate and then running over. If you are drafting a talk, budget words against the clock first and let the page count fall where it falls — a quick word and reading-time count on the draft beats timing yourself with a stopwatch.

FAQ

Does a 1,000-word essay have to be exactly four pages?

No. Four pages double-spaced is the estimate for continuous prose in Times New Roman 12 pt with 1-inch margins, and real documents drift from it by half a page in either direction. Headings, block quotes, bullet lists and a title page all add vertical space without adding many words, so a structured 1,000-word document usually runs slightly longer than four pages.

If your instructor set a page requirement rather than a word requirement, format the document exactly as specified and count the pages there. If they set a word requirement, ignore pages entirely.

Do titles, headings and references count toward a word limit?

It depends on the assignment, and this is worth checking rather than assuming. Many university departments exclude the title page, reference list and appendices from the word count but include in-text citations, footnotes and block quotes. Others count everything between the first and last word of the body.

The safest approach is to find the wording in the assignment brief or module handbook and follow it literally. Where the brief is silent, count the body text only and say what you counted in a note to your instructor.

Is single-spaced or double-spaced standard for academic work?

Double-spaced is the default for most US academic submissions in MLA, APA and Chicago style, largely because it leaves room for handwritten comments. Single spacing is more common for professional documents such as reports and memos, and many UK and Australian universities specify 1.5 instead.

Since those three settings change your page count by a factor of two, never assume. The spacing requirement is almost always stated in the brief or the style guide, and it is the single largest variable in the table above.
