Characters with or without spaces?
Almost every platform and form counts spaces, punctuation and line breaks as characters, so the big number above is the one to watch. "Without spaces" is what some academic and translation briefs mean by character count, so both are shown.
How emoji and accents are counted
This counter treats one visible character as one, including emoji and accented letters, which matches Instagram, LinkedIn and SMS in most cases. X (Twitter) is the exception: it counts most emoji and East Asian characters as two, so a post full of emoji hits 280 sooner than it looks. The byte count at the bottom is the UTF-8 size, useful for SMS (which drops to 70 characters per message once any emoji or non-Latin text is present) and for form fields that limit bytes rather than characters.
